Virtual Financial Advisor: How Oak Road Wealth Management Works With You Online

October 9, 2026

Work with a virtual financial advisor from anywhere in the U.S. See how Oak Road's fee-only fiduciaries plan, invest, and meet with you by video.

Working with a virtual financial advisor at Oak Road Wealth Management takes four simple steps, all online. You start with a 20-minute introductory call. We gather your information through a digital fact finder. You open and transfer accounts at Charles Schwab and sign everything electronically. Then we meet by video each year to keep your retirement plan on track. You never have to visit our office, no matter where you live.

Oak Road Wealth Management is a fee-only fiduciary financial planning firm based in Lee's Summit, Missouri. We serve clients nationally, and we want you to feel confident about your retirement plan wherever you are.

What Is a Virtual Financial Advisor?

A virtual financial advisor is a financial planner who works with you through phone calls, video conferences, secure online tools, and electronic signatures instead of in-person meetings. The advice, planning, and investment management are the same as in a traditional office. Only the delivery changes.

At Oak Road, virtual clients get the same fiduciary standard as clients who live nearby. Fee-only means we are paid by our clients, not by commissions on products we sell. Fiduciary means we are obligated to act in your best interest.

How Does Working With Oak Road Start?

Every relationship starts with a complimentary 20-minute introductory call. We hold it by phone or video conference, whichever you prefer.

The call has one purpose: to find out whether working together makes sense for both of us. We learn about your goals, your questions, and what you want from an advisor. You learn how we work, what we charge, and which service fits you best. There is no pressure and no obligation.

What Should I Prepare for the Introductory Call?

You don't need to prepare anything. It helps to think about what prompted you to look for an advisor, such as an upcoming retirement, a large decision, or a need for a second opinion. We take it from there.

Which Financial Planning Services Can I Use Virtually?

You can use all of our core services online. Each one is available by phone or video from anywhere in the country.

  • Wealth Management is our most comprehensive service and fits best for clients with $500,000 or more to invest. It includes retirement planning, investment management, tax-aware strategies, and ongoing guidance. The minimum annual fee is $5,000, and the fee is 1.00% on the first $2 million, 0.50% on the next $2 million, and 0.25% above $4 million.
  • One-Time Financial Planning is a defined engagement that gives you a comprehensive plan built in MoneyGuidePro, with scenario analysis and 12 months of online access. The cost starts at $2,500.
  • Hourly Advice is a focused one-hour consultation on a specific decision, such as a 401(k), a pension, or Social Security. The rate is $500 per hour.

You can see the full details on our How We Help page.

What Are the Steps to Become a Virtual Wealth Management Client?

Becoming a Wealth Management client takes four steps, and you can complete all of them from home. Here is how the process works.

Step 1: How Do We Learn About Your Financial Life?

You complete our online fact finder. This secure tool collects information about your income, savings, investments, retirement benefits, and goals. It replaces the stack of paper forms and gives us what we need to build your plan.

Step 2: How Do You Open and Transfer Accounts Online?

We open and transfer your accounts digitally at Charles Schwab, our custodian. A custodian is the independent firm that holds your investments. Because Schwab holds your assets, you can log in and see your accounts at any time.

Step 3: Can I Sign Everything Electronically?

Yes. You sign all required paperwork electronically. Most clients finish this step in a short time once their information is ready.

Step 4: What Happens After My Accounts Are Set Up?

We hold your first planning meeting by video conference, then meet again each year. Between meetings, we monitor and rebalance your portfolio and are available when life changes.

How Do Yearly Planning Meetings Work by Video?

Yearly planning meetings are scheduled video conferences where we review your plan, your investments, and any changes in your life. You join from a computer, tablet, or phone with a link we send you. We can share our screen so you can see projections, scenarios, and portfolio details as we talk.

A typical annual meeting covers:

  • Progress toward your retirement goals
  • Retirement income and spending
  • Tax-aware strategies
  • Social Security and benefit decisions
  • Estate and legacy planning coordination

Is Virtual Financial Planning as Good as Meeting in Person?

Virtual financial planning works as well as in-person planning for most people. The quality of advice depends on the advisor's expertise, process, and communication, not on the room you are sitting in. Video meetings also remove travel, make scheduling easier, and let spouses or family members join from different locations.

If you prefer an in-person meeting and live near Lee's Summit, we can often arrange one for certain services.

Who Is a Virtual Financial Advisor Best For?

A virtual financial advisor works well for people who are comfortable with basic technology and want flexibility. This often includes:

  • Pre-retirees and retirees who want help creating a retirement income plan
  • Professionals with busy schedules
  • People who live outside the Kansas City area
  • Couples who want to meet from different locations
  • Anyone who wants a fee-only fiduciary without a commute

Ready to See if Working Together Makes Sense?

The first step is a conversation. Book a complimentary 20-minute introductory call and we'll talk about your goals and the best way to help. Distance doesn't matter. We want you to feel confident about your retirement plan.
